Though the current church of the Old San Miguel Mission was completed in 1626, the original structure was built in 1598 by two Franciscan priests and local Native Americans, making it the oldest Catholic church in the country. Though more recent renovations have added to its size, the 1626 Pueblo-styled structure still stands as the center of the church. Part of the church's fascinating history includes a story of buried treasures, still undiscovered though searched for by many during the latter part of the 20th century. Located in the northwestern portion of the town, the church is just east of New Mexico Tech Golf Course.
